Who doesn’t stop to watch the enchanting sight of a butterfly darting about on colorful wings in seemingly erratic, free-spirited flight? These winsome creatures are among Nature’s most fascinating insects.
Butterflies are found around the world, except where it’s very cold and very dry, and are important pollinators for the flowers to which they are attracted. Adults feed primarily on nectar, but also occasionally on tree sap, spoiled fruit and dissolved minerals in wet dirt and sand. They transition through four lifecycles—from egg to larva (caterpillar) to pupa to adult (also called imago, the only stage with functioning wings) – in a complete metamorphosis.
