The flower first became adopted by those that traveled through the area during the gold rush. The Pioneers of Alaska is a fraternal organization that was founded in Nome, Alaska in 1907, they adopted the Forget Me Not as their emblem. In 1917, the flower became the official Alaska state flower. In the margin of the bill that passed, there is a little note that states how this flower has long been admired by the pioneers as they made their way up the trails. Thus, it seemed fitting to make this the state flower.
